Amazon will discontinue some unspecified Alexa initiatives to align better with business priorities and customer needs. The key focus going forward is "maximizing resources and efforts on generative AI."
With OpenAI exclusive to Microsoft Azure, and Google's Gemini coming in 2024, Amazon risks falling behind in leveraging LLMs for its cloud platform. An in-house LLM called Olympus is reportedly in the works.
It remains to be seen if Amazon can catch up to its Big Tech peers in leveraging AI to enhance its offerings.

The nonprofit LAION has announced an exciting new open-source initiative called Open Empathic that aims to equip AI systems with empathy and emotional intelligence. This could revolutionize the way AI interacts with and assists humans across many domains. Some examples:
Education - Adaptive AI tutors could respond to students' emotional needs and foster a positive learning environment.
Mental health - Empathetic AI companions could provide support and alleviate loneliness for isolated people.

To make this happen, Open Empathic needs volunteers to help create an audio dataset to train empathic speech models. Contributors can annotate YouTube clips with tags describing the speaker's emotions. LAION provides a web tool to make annotation easy.
The initial goal is 10,000 samples, working up to 100,000-1 million in the next year. This dataset will be open source so anyone can use it to build more empathetic AI.
