Chaos Unleashed at OpenAI: Sam Altman Fired, Employees Threaten Mass Exodus

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired last Friday. Since then, the story has developed rapidly. Here's a chronological overview of what has happened so far:

  • On Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired without notice following a board review that found him not "consistently candid" in communications. CTO Mira Murati stepped in as interim CEO.

  • President Greg Brockman quits after being removed from the board and makes a tweet detailing how the situation came as a surprise to both him and Altman.

  • Some reports pointed to OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever as one of those responsible for this move, citing disagreements over the speed of development and AI safety.

  • OPEN AI employees contemplated quitting if Altman was not restored as CEO and many expressed their support on Twitter.

  • On Saturday, OpenAI investors pushed to reinstate ousted CEO Sam Altman. OpenAI and Altman discussed a possible return to the company

  • On Sunday, Altman posted a picture of himself inside OpenAI's San Francisco office, where the discussions were being held. Altman was reportedly 'ambivalent' about returning, and one of his conditions was a significant governance change.

  • Today we got some shocking news, the negotiations broke down and Open AI announced Emmett Shear, Twitch co-founder, as the new interim CEO. Making him the third CEO of the company in just a few days.

  • Microsoft announced that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team.

  • But that’s not the end of the troubles for OpenAI; hundreds of its employees are threatening to resign and join Microsoft if the board does not resign.

  • Ilya Sutskever has expressed regret for his participation in these events.

The story continues to unfold, and it's challenging to predict the future of OpenAI. Will they be able to recover if their talent leaves for Microsoft? Can Emmett Shear convince them to stay and make them believe in him as the leader of the project? We will keep you informed.

AMAZON

Amazon Shifts Its Focus to Generative AI

Amazon is shifting priorities and resources to focus on developing new forms of generative artificial intelligence, according to an internal memo from Alexa VP Daniel Rausch. As a result, the company plans to cut several hundred jobs from its Alexa division.

Details:

  • Amazon will discontinue some unspecified Alexa initiatives to align better with business priorities and customer needs. The key focus going forward is "maximizing resources and efforts on generative AI."

  • With OpenAI exclusive to Microsoft Azure, and Google's Gemini coming in 2024, Amazon risks falling behind in leveraging LLMs for its cloud platform. An in-house LLM called Olympus is reportedly in the works.

It remains to be seen if Amazon can catch up to its Big Tech peers in leveraging AI to enhance its offerings.

AI RESEARCH

Making AI More Emotionally Intelligent

The nonprofit LAION has announced an exciting new open-source initiative called Open Empathic that aims to equip AI systems with empathy and emotional intelligence. This could revolutionize the way AI interacts with and assists humans across many domains. Some examples:

  • Education - Adaptive AI tutors could respond to students' emotional needs and foster a positive learning environment.

  • Mental health - Empathetic AI companions could provide support and alleviate loneliness for isolated people.

  • Entertainment - New emotionally aware AI could enable innovative gaming and media experiences.

To make this happen, Open Empathic needs volunteers to help create an audio dataset to train empathic speech models. Contributors can annotate YouTube clips with tags describing the speaker's emotions. LAION provides a web tool to make annotation easy.

The initial goal is 10,000 samples, working up to 100,000-1 million in the next year. This dataset will be open source so anyone can use it to build more empathetic AI.

This is an exciting step toward AI that interacts with users in a more understanding, adaptive, and caring way.
