AI REGULATION

California Governor Vetoes AI Regulation Bill, Calls for Better Approach 🤯

California Governor Gavin Newsom has rejected SB 1047, a bill aimed at regulating high-risk AI models, citing concerns that it provides a "false sense of security."

Details:

  • The proposed legislation would have forced companies to publish safety protocols and undergo audits, but Newsom believes it misses the mark on real risks associated with AI technology.

  • Newsom argues that the bill focuses too much on the size and cost of AI models rather than the actual risks they pose.

  • The Governor advocates for regulations that are based on real-world evidence and the specific risks associated with different AI applications, rather than just their computational demands.

  • He warns that overly stringent regulations could stifle innovation, potentially leading to dangerous smaller AI models being overlooked.

With this veto, California halts its plans to be the first state with comprehensive AI regulations, but discussions on the best way to manage AI development will likely continue. Notably, OpenAI opposed the bill, suggesting that regulation should occur at the federal level.

Microsoft Introduces New AI-Powered Tools for Paint and Photos

Microsoft is enhancing its Paint and Photos applications with new AI features that make image editing simpler and more accessible.

Details:

  • The new Generative Fill and Generative Erase allow users to modify images by painting over specific areas.

  • Generative Erase removes unwanted objects or distractions, similar to the Magic Eraser on Google’s Pixel phones.

  • With Generative Fill, users can add new AI-generated elements to images based on text descriptions.

  • These features build on the previously announced Cocreator tool, which generates images through text prompts and sketches, now with improved quality and speed.

  • The Photos app will also include the Generative Erase tool and a new Super-Resolution feature, allowing users to upscale images up to eight times their original size quickly and effectively.

The addition of these innovative AI tools offers exciting new options for digital creators, reducing dependence on more complex image editing software.
