Apple Reveals New MM1 Model That Could Power Next-Gen Siri 💥

Source: Apple

In a newly released research paper, Apple researchers detail MM1, a new family of multimodal large language models (MLLMs).

Details:

  • The paper shows a novel method for training multimodal models using synthetic data such as images and text.

  • MM1’s largest model has 30 billion parameters, much smaller than GPT-4 and Claude 3 Opus, which exceed a trillion parameters.

  • However, Apple's researchers claim that MM1 can match them in key benchmarks, highlighting superior prompt understanding that reduces the number of follow-up prompts to achieve a desired result.

While the paper doesn't explicitly mention Siri, the focus on performance, prompt efficiency, and multimodal capabilities strongly hints at MM1's potential to power the next generation of Apple's virtual assistant.

Additionally, recent news from Bloomberg indicates that Apple might be planning to bring Gemini to the iPhone. These developments suggest that the long-awaited AI breakthrough promised by Apple’s CEO may be just around the corner.

Elon Musk announced on March 11th that xAI would make its AI chatbot Grok open source, and now it's available for public access on GitHub.

Details:

  • xAI has released the architecture and weights of its 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model under the Apache 2.0 license.

  • Grok-1 is the largest Mixture-of-Experts model released as open source so far.

  • This released model is the unrefined base model from the pre-training phase completed in October 2023, which has not yet been optimized for specific applications.

The open-sourcing of such a massive language model is significant as it now enables entrepreneurs, developers, companies, and individuals to access Grok's weights and associated documentation, allowing them to use a copy of the model for various purposes, including commercial applications.
