Apple has released OpenELM, a set of open-source language models designed for efficiency and enhanced performance using less training data. They are optimized to work well on edge devices such as smartphones or laptops.
Details:
The OpenELM models are available in four sizes: 270 million, 450 million, 1.1 billion, and 3 billion parameters. Additionally, all models are offered in a fine-tuned version with instructions.
The models leverage a layer-wise scaling strategy to distribute parameters more efficiently within the transformer architecture, resulting in higher accuracy compared to similar models. In simpler terms, OpenELM achieves slightly better performance with less data and compute.
You can find the models on Git Hub and Huggingface.
OpenELM represents a crucial step in Apple's AI strategy, which prioritizes privacy, efficiency, and on-device generative AI capabilities.

Sanctuary AI Introduces the Next Generation of Phoenix Bot

Sanctuary AI, a Canadian robotics company, has introduced the seventh generation of its Phoenix humanoid robot, boasting faster learning capabilities and a more cost-effective design.
Details:
The new Phoenix robot can automate new tasks in less than 24 hours, exhibiting human-like movements in tasks such as product sorting.
Sanctuary AI claims it is the "most closely analogous to a person of any available"
Enhancements include increased uptime, improved range of motion, reduced weight, and a lower-cost bill of materials compared to previous generations.
Sanctuary AI has already deployed earlier Phoenix systems and recently announced a deal to bring its robots to Magna's auto manufacturing facilities.
While often overshadowed by names like Boston Dynamics and Figure, Sanctuary AI continues to make strides in the field of humanoid robotics. The progress of this new version is impressive, especially considering it's only been a year since the last one.
