AI Dependency in Students

A recent study conducted by Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul and Korea University has shed light on the factors contributing to AI dependency among students.

Details:

• Based on a survey of 300 students with experience using ChatGPT, the research aimed to explore the factors that may lead to AI addiction among students.

• The researchers defined AI dependency as "excessive reliance on AI technologies and applications across various aspects of life, including academic studies, daily routines, and social interactions"

• The researchers found that low academic self-efficacy leads to increased stress and higher expectations of AI, resulting in greater dependency.

• Students reported several adverse effects of AI dependency, including increased laziness, limited creativity, dissemination of false information, reduced critical and independent thinking, diminished problem-solving skills, and a higher risk of plagiarism.

The study acknowledges several limitations, such as the reliance on subjective self-assessments and the focus on a specific demographic (the results refer only to South Korean students). Future studies are planned to tackle these limitations.
