AI Cleans Up Wikipedia's References, Boosting Reliability
Source: Wikipedia
Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia anyone can edit, relies on citations and references to back up information and establish credibility. But some references point to broken links or questionable sources.
A recent study reveals an AI system called SIDE (Shortcomings Identification Discovery and Enhancement) that can:
Flag questionable Wikipedia references
Find better reference sources to replace weak or broken links
Suggest new references to improve credibility
In tests with Wikipedia users, 21% preferred the citations found by the AI, 10% preferred the existing citations and 39% did not have a preference. So there is still work to be done.
The AI could save editors time in evaluating citations. However, it still needs human supervision to deploy effectively. With the right implementation, it could make Wikipedia entries more consistently well-sourced and reliable.
