Anthropic Launches Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code

Anthropic is releasing Claude 3.7 Sonnet, the industry’s first “hybrid reasoning model,” which can solve more complex problems, and Claude Code, a new tool for programming.

Details:

  • Claude 3.7 Sonnet introduces an "Extended Thinking" mode that allows the model to reason through its responses. This means users can choose whether to activate the AI’s reasoning abilities, prompting Claude 3.7 Sonnet to "think" for either a short or long period of time.

  • When using Claude 3.7 Sonnet through the API, users can limit thinking to N tokens, up to the 128K token output limit. This allows you to trade off speed (and cost) for answer quality.

  • In benchmarks, it shows significant improvements compared to its predecessor and even surpasses OpenAI o1, o 3, and DeepSeek-R1 in certain areas, such as graduate-level reasoning tasks and agentic tool use.

  • The company also released Claude Code, a command-line tool that can search and read code, edit files, write and run tests, commit and push code to GitHub, and use command-line tools.

Claude 3.7 Sonnet is available in all Claude plans, including the free version, as well as through the Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud Vertex AI. The extended thinking mode is available on all platforms except the free Claude version.

Google Introduces Free AI Coding Assistant With High Usage Caps

Google has launched Gemini Code Assist for Individuals, a free AI-powered coding assistant that offers developers a powerful tool for writing, debugging, and understanding code.

Details:

  • This free AI tool lets developers use a chat window to talk in natural language with a Google AI model that can access and edit their codebase. It can fix bugs, complete sections of code, or explain parts of the codebase that don’t make sense.

  • It is powered by Google’s Gemini 2.0 AI model, fine-tuned for coding with a 128,000-token context window, enabling it to handle larger and more complex codebases, and offers 180,000 code completions per month—90 times more than GitHub Copilot’s free plan—along with 240 daily chat requests.

  • The assistant can integrate with popular coding environments such as VS Code and JetBrains via plugins and works across many popular programming languages.

  • The company also rolled out Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, a code review “agent” designed to automatically look for bugs in code and offer suggestions directly within GitHub.

With generous usage caps and compatibility with popular development environments, this release strengthens Google's position in the AI developer tools market. It possibly aims to attract early-career developers to its free plan, with the goal of converting some into enterprise customers.
