Ranking of Artificial Intelligence startups, by Country

Key details:

  • The history of AI computation power can be divided into three key eras. In the early decades, computation grew slowly according to Moore's Law. The Deep Learning Era from 2012 saw an acceleration, with doubling times shortening to 6 months as more investment poured in. Since 2015, we entered the era of large-scale AI models requiring massive computational resources.

  • This tremendous growth in computation, combined with more training data and improved algorithms, has led to huge progress in AI capabilities. AI can now match or exceed human abilities in many domains. However, it's unclear if this pace can be sustained. Larger AI models require more resources, and available training data may be exhausted. However, continued funding and research could yield further breakthroughs.

EU Fears AI's Role in Election Disinformation Blitz

The EU is concerned about the risks of AI-generated disinformation ahead of the 2024 elections. It is pressuring platforms like Google, Meta, and TikTok to implement more safeguards against deepfakes through its voluntary Code of Practice on Disinformation. Commissioner Jourova warns generative AI has a high potential for spreading false content and platforms must be vigilant in providing protections, especially for elections.
