DeepMind CEO: AI Hype Doesn't Match Reality (Yet)
Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, recently shared his perspective on the current state of artificial intelligence.

Current AI is overhyped. Many claims about AI's abilities are premature, and the technology isn't capable of achieving everything some startups and investors suggest.
On the other hand, Hassabis believes society has yet to grasp the full potential of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and its implications for solving global challenges.
He views AGI as a powerful tool for addressing critical issues like disease, energy, and climate change, while also highlighting the need for international cooperation to ensure powerful AI is used safely and ethically
Hassabis believes AGI could be achievable within the next decade.
Hassabis' perspective serves as a reminder that while we are witnessing remarkable advancements in AI, the field is still evolving and remains far from reaching its full potential, according to most experts.

Harvard Finds LLMs Are a Big Part of Students' Daily Routines
A study conducted by the Harvard Undergraduate Association reveals that generative AI, particularly large language models (LLMs), is becoming an integral part of students' daily routines.
Details:
Out of 326 surveyed students, nearly 90% reported using generative AI tools, with 87.5% using them regularly. Among these users, nearly half engage with AI at least every other day
A quarter of the students indicated that AI partially substitutes for attending office hours and reading required materials.
Approximately one-third of students are replacing traditional information sources like Wikipedia or Google with AI systems
OpenAI's ChatGPT is the most popular tool, used by over 95% of AI-engaged students. Other AI tools like Anthropic's Claude and GitHub Copilot are used by about 20% of students.
The findings from this study underscore the transformative role of AI in education, prompting universities to consider how they can adapt to these changes. The study recommends providing free AI access to all students, establishing clear guidelines for AI use, and offering AI-focused career counseling.
