AI Forum: Elon Musk Warns of "Civilizational Risk"

A private AI summit with senators and tech execs was held last wednesday 13th. Here are the key details about the meeting:
Musk warned the group that AI poses a "civilizational risk" to humanity. He said we need to be "proactive rather than reactive" in regulating AI given the severe consequences if things go wrong.
Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, and OpenAI's Sam Altman also attended the closed-door forum. Senators from both parties organized the event.
Musk endorsed creating a new federal AI agency to oversee the technology. Other execs agreed government must play a role in regulating AI.
There were disagreements on how exactly AI should be regulated. Some called for more high-skilled immigration to boost AI talent in the U.S.

AI RESEARCH
New AI system can detect eye disease and Parkinson's risk from retinal images
Researchers have developed an exciting new AI tool called RETFound that analyzes retinal images to identify various eye diseases and even predict systemic health risks like Parkinson's.
Details:
It was developed using a method known as self-supervised learning, a method similar to the one used to train large-language models such as ChatGPT.
In tests, it was highly accurate at identifying diabetic retinopathy and performed better than other AI models at assessing risk of systematic diseases like stroke, Parkinson’s, heart attacks and heart failure.
The researchers have made RETFound publicly available for others to build on. It could be tailored for local populations and settings around the world.
The ability to leverage vast unlabeled data sets to develop adaptable AI models like RETFound represents an exciting advancement.
