OpenAI Considers Ads in ChatGPT to Boost Revenue 💹

OpenAI is reportedly exploring the potential of introducing advertising to its AI products as it seeks new revenue sources.

Details:

• OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told the Financial Times that the company is considering ads as a potential revenue stream, emphasizing they would be “thoughtful” about when and where ads appear.

• However, in a follow-up statement, she clarified that there are no active plans to pursue advertising, at least for now, though the discussions signal openness to the model.

• The company recently hired Shivakumar Venkataraman, Google’s former head of search advertising, and Kevin Weil, who previously led Instagram’s ad platform.

• Sam Altman is not a fan of the idea. In a recent fireside chat at Harvard Business School, he expressed unease with ads, calling them a “last resort” and describing the combination of ads and AI as “uniquely unsettling.”

While OpenAI denies immediate plans for ads, rising costs to maintain and develop AI tools may push the company to reconsider its revenue model, which currently relies on subscriptions to fund its operations.
